Plaincast

What the forecast actually says — NWS Area Forecast Discussions, decoded into plain English.

Plaincast decodes the National Weather Service's Area Forecast Discussion — the real forecast, written 3 to 4 times a day by the meteorologist on shift — into plain English. The discussion is where a forecaster explains their reasoning: which models disagree, what they are watching, and how confident they are. Below is the current edition for Chicago, with its shorthand expanded. The full experience — an AI plain-English summary beside the annotated original — loads with JavaScript, and every one of the 68 forecast offices has its own edition.

Discussion

There's not a lot to speak on for this weekend as our stretch of dry, mild weather continues. Temperatures early this morning are in the 40s and 50s with mostly clear skies now giving way to a high cloud deck filling in from the west. Some patchy fog is beginning to blossom around parts of SE WI and north-central IN. Patchy coverage is expected to spread into portions of our forecast area prior to daybreak, primarily across parts of NW Indiana as well as in Lake Co, IL. While dense fog is not a widespread concern, localized pockets of some denser fog will certainly be possible through early morning, especially in Lake Co, IL. Otherwise, expect another pleasant late October day today with highs forecast in the lower 70s and a fair mix of mid-high clouds and sunshine.

Tomorrow is anticipated to be slightly warmer with lower to middle 70s in the forecast. A weakly-forced cold front will drop through the area from the north late Sunday into Monday. While we're not expecting any rain out of this, it will cool things off slightly for Monday and Tuesday. Monday, given that the front will be pushing north to south across our area into the daytime, is expected to see high temperatures range from the lower and middle 60s in our north to the 70 farther south. 60s and lower 70s will persist through the week with rain-free conditions favored through at least mid-week. A series of waves is then progged to traverse the region and possibly provide us with some rain late in the week and into next weekend.
